Oppo had previously created a foldable phone, but it was an experiment. With this second edition, the Oppo Find N2, the company has improved things to such a degree that you might be forgiven for supposing it is a much later model. It begins satisfactorily.

Notably, it weighs 30g less than a Samsung Z Fold 4 while having a less prominent fold. It's even lighter than the 240g iPhone 14 Pro Max, and the lack of weight is immediately obvious after using other foldable; nevertheless, it's crucial to note that the Samsung is larger, as its internal display is 0.5 inches larger.

Now, it's important to note that while the Find N2 Flip will leave China to be sold in Europe, no such global release is planned for the Find N2. We may have to wait till the Find N3 to see it marketed outside of China. The Chinese price is approximately $1,100 in the United States or £900 in the United Kingdom (though it would never truly retail for £900).

Design and exhibit

While the design is identical to the original Find N in size and general feel, the Find N2 is 42g lighter than its predecessor, representing a significant internal improvement.

The phone features a 7.1-inch internal display with a resolution of 1920 1792 and a 5.54-inch external display with a resolution of 2120 1080, with variable refresh rates of up to 120Hz. The exterior show is more than adequate for calls and texts, and you'll likely open the phone for a larger viewing experience when surfing. However, some users will find the external display too small, although there are other folding options with larger external displays. Due to the smaller size of this gadget, the internal screen is a rectangle that is longer horizontally than, for example, Samsung's square screen.

The external display's bezel has been shrunk by roughly half compared to the Find N, which we reviewed earlier this year.

We've already highlighted the weight; the thickness has also been lowered to 14.6mm (7.4mm when unfolded), which is equivalent to the Samsung but falls short of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2's design.

The Find N2 and Find N2 Flip have a redesigned Flexion hinge, representing the most significant modification. As a result, Oppo claims it is more durable, with a guarantee of 400,000 openings and closes (like the Honor Magic Vs). In addition, it comprises 100 distinct components but employs less than before and lighter materials, such as carbon fiber and aerospace-grade metals.

The redesigned hinge makes the display's crease 67 percent narrower, a significant improvement. Once the phone is unfurled, the display wrinkle is barely noticeable unless you run your finger over it. However, it in no way detracts from the full-screen experience. There is no space between the device's two sides when closed. The two halves close with a gratifying slap, but opening and shutting the phone is fluid; there is no sense of clunkiness. In theory, you can disassemble and utilize the device, but you won't.

The Find N2 lacks a water resistance rating, likely because of the hinge; in contrast, Samsung's Z Fold 4 is water-resistant. In China, three color options are available: white and green with Gorilla Glass backing. As you can see, our unit is black with a vegan leather backing.

Specifications and camera

The Oppo Find N2 is an excellent second-generation foldable phone.

As expected, there is an incredible array of technology supported by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip from the middle of last year. This was created far too early for the recently released 8 Gen 2. Additionally, there are 12GB of RAM and 256/512GB of storage. 67W rapid charging is also available, although, like with other foldable, wireless charging is absent.

A 50MP Sony IMX890 wide sensor, a 48MP ultra-wide camera (useful for macro images), and a 32MP RGBW 2x telephoto camera that suppresses noise for better portraiture and zoom are also included. This approach would be great for the vast majority of people, as it is quick, and the images are amazing.

The two selfie cams on each display are 32GB and provide excellent photographs. Unsurprisingly, Oppo's proprietary MariSilicon X image processor is included. However, like the old Snapdragon chip, there are better options than this, perhaps due to the lengthy lead times required to manufacture such a device. As demand for foldable grows, so will the number of resources devoted to their development.

Software

Unsurprisingly for a Chinese phone, our test unit runs a Chinese version of Android 13-based Color OS without Google apps. However, you can install whatever you like on it. However, the software is not yet ready for primetime, as not all apps display correctly when placed side-by-side, even though everything functions flawlessly and looks nice in full-screen mode.

Presumably, issues like this will sort out with time, and we presume a lot of it is that they can't split the screen horizontally very effectively. Unfortunately, it is impossible to determine how much this is due to the Chinese version of the software compared to the international version.

Oppo Find N2 preliminary evaluation

There's no doubt that the hardware on display here is fantastic and defies the 'difficult follow-up' label, despite a large question mark over how much this gadget would cost if it were sold outside of China, as well as worries regarding the software. The price discussion is probably moot, as we don't believe this will be released globally, but this bodes well for future Oppo foldable.
